errand world

When I was young my mother would often tell me that she had to go run some errands and that she would be back at such-in-such a time. For some reason I completely romanticized this concept. Errands seemed so mysterious and exciting. I was too young to run errands myself, but I really wanted to. Aah, how times do change. Laurel and I have been doing many errands over the past several days. I no longer consider them to by mysterious or exciting.

Take yesterday's major errands for example. We wanted to get a driver's license and update our car's tags. To simple tasks right? Ha ha ha! When we went to the DMV, we were told that we needed more identification and proof of residency. Well, I wasn't excited about having driven out to Greer for no reason, but I figured that the requirements were reasonable. We then made our way to the Greenville County Office to pay our road tax. They wouldn't let us. "No, no, no, please don't pay your taxes." The problem again was that we didn't have sufficient proof of residency. This was a mystery to me. Why do you have to prove something in order to pay taxes. I guess that this mystery might qualify errands as mysterious, but it wasn't what I had in mind when I was young.

Anyhow, we had gone several places and accomplished nothing. It was then time to pick Laurel's mother up from the Furman library and head home. After accomplishing this task, we headed back to the DMV to wait an hour away before we got our new driver's licenses. I was so sad to have to surrender my old Ohio license, I feel like a traitor to Ohio. But the lady at the counter said that I wasn't allowed to have two licenses.

We finally accomplished our first goal, and we hope to be able to pay our road tax today.
